Today we practiced reacting to contact rear and assaulting a fixed position with an emphasis on cover fire and bunker tagging. Both exercises we a success. At the practice we identified that we need to improve the following:
1- Calling out your targets.
Everyone was great about calling out your target but we need to improve on calling out a direction that the rest of the team will understand. For example, don’t call out that the target is behind a tree. Give a short description of the tree, the direction from your or the teams position, prone, kneeling or standing. Moving left or right.
Example 1: Contact, my 9 o’clock, one prone, behind large tree, right side.
Example 2: Contact, my 12 o’clock, 3 moving left
Example 3: Friendly, my 3 o’clock, one in the small bunker
Soon we need to work on scouting and being able to give a SALUTE Report to command. The Salute report is as follows:
SALUTE = Size, Activity, Location, Unit, Time, Equipment
2- Reaction time.
Everyone did great when we were moving on a fixed position where we knew the enemy strength and where they were. We will continue to work on this to increase our responce times.
3-Formation
We usually aren’t too strict about adhering exactly to our formations while traveling through the woods, but one thing we need to make sure is that our lines do not pass the pointman. He is watching and listening for enemy contact as he moves forward and if you pass him you may be revealing our position, triggering an ambush, or forcing the pointman to move fast to stay ahead of you when he may be seeing signs of enemy activity that tell him to go slow and cautious. If the pointman is going too slow for no reason, trust your fireteam leader to address it. Don’t take it into your own hands. You have your sector to cover, and he has his.
Guys, for those who are going to Fulda, we need to figure out who is camping and who is not. For those that are not camping, I’d like to see a convoy formed so that we can time everything and be locked and loaded before anything important happens.
We are going GREEN for this one.
So if you are going, sound off on what you plan to do. It is strongly suggested that you keep me updated so that we do not have any loose ends or stragglers!!!
I’d like to avoid a major Charlie Foxtrot on game day if possible, if you guys know what I mean. To give you an indication, if the year over year trend keeps up, we’re expecting well over 400 people on this day. Registration and chrono will be a nightmare, so if we can, we will leverage our team status and try to conduct our own chrono and turn the sheets in so that we will stay out of the lines.
We also need to figure out our squad structure.

Planning for Goat Island game
This game was a ton of fun, and it was even better knowing that I had such a good group of guys to work with. You guys worked hard and were spot on, and did not get distracted by the at times long, uneventful waits between engagements. Honest to God, we have worked with players before that wandered off when they got bored, leaving us unknowingly exposed in their sector. Unit cohesion was very apparent. I knew that where I found one of us, I could easily find the rest in the area. Noise discipline was excellent, too. You guys did not chatter much at all while on the job. Way to go!!
I tried to stress target identification and communication, to avoid blue on blue or sparking off an unintended engagement with Ravenwood, and again everyone again did a great job on that.
Among the many highlights of this game, the assault on unfinished fort was memorable. We moved to a point just out of range of the defenders, and waited until our second force, SWC, staged up to their point off to the side. On command, we simultaneously commenced our assault on the fort from both sides and had it within mere minutes.
Many engagements at the white house, which made for an exciting time.
Sorry for hitting you ravenwood guys in your respawn area, we were careful to identify and observe for several minutes, but when you started forming up for the attack on Jericho, we could not let that happen. Unfortunately, we did did not know that you guys were where you were, or we would have let you get out of there first. The outcome would have been the same, though.
Sustain:
Focus on our mission
Noise discipline
Unit cohesion
Good communication
Target ID
Good working relationships with other teams
Good break contact drill at the end of the day.
Improve:
Find a darker shemagh, Grant. White is really noticable. ![]()
I will remember to jeep a flashlight on my gear next time.
Tactical defogger works! It is cheep, I recommend that everyone get one. ![]()
I will try to take more pics and videos.
I hope that Matt, Daniel and Jim had a good time and will return to play with us!
